From Criminal to Courtier
At once military, social and art history, this book elucidates various visual media, much of it little known, that denounce military cruelty in the Netherlands of the 16th and 17th century. This unique Netherlands specialty contrasts with Rubens' glorification of war, and its justification in patriotic siege prints, Scipio Africanus, and the "courtiers" of the civic guard groups and Ter Borch.
Scientists in the throes of research use an extensive data bank to access structural information on proteins and nucleic acids. Meanwhile, geneticists use a highly specialized form of software to analyze the hybridization pattern of DNA chips. The past decade has been tremendously successful for biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. This success has been a result of astounding technical advancements in genome sequencing (genomics), protein identification (proteomics), and data analysis-collectively called bioinformatics. The exponential increase in computer processing and disk storage has served as a catalyst and been instrumental in the development of bioinformatics. Bioinformatics Basics: Applications in Biological Science and Medicine describes the origin of this field and the organization of public domain databases with an introductory tutorial for the services described. This book explains these services in a relatively simple fashion. Nevertheless, a biological background is necessary to understand and properly utilize the various software components and services described in this book. A basic biological background is also necessary for understanding the biological and medical significance of the collected data. Bioinformatics Basics is a fast growing field, and it will take some years for a stabilization to occur. Until then, hundreds of Internet sites allow us to search, compare, and manipulate this data in its relatively raw format. Bioinformatics Basics: Applications in Biological Science and Medicine concentrates on three major database clusters and relevant software tools that are maintained in the United States, Europe, and Japan, offering free access and analysis through the Internet.
The Book of Tapas
The huge popularity of Spanish food has grown even more following the publication of the iconic 1080 Recipes, and the best-loved type of Spanish food is tapas. Tapas consists of appetizing little dishes of bite-sized food, usually eaten before or after dinner, and it has become a Spanish way of life. Served in bars all over Spain, good tapas is all about the perfect marriage of food, drink and conversation. Now, for the first time, the 1080 Book of Tapas presents a complete guide to this convivial way of eating with over 200 easy-to-follow recipes that can be served with drinks in typical Spanish style, or combined to create a feast to share with friends. The recipes are fully updated and easy to follow, and include the most popular tapas dishes from 1080 Recipes, along with many brand new recipes from the Ortegas' definitive collection. They are simple to prepare in any kitchen and yet utterly authentic, enabling any aspiring cook to make their first attempt at cooking Spanish food, or helping more experienced cooks to expand their repertoire. Also included in this book are modern tapas recipes from some of the world's best-known tapas chefs, including Jose Andres, Albert Adria, Albert Raurich, Jose Manuel Pizarro, and Sam and Eddie Hart. The book's authors, Simone and Ines Ortega, are the ultimate authorities on traditional cooking in Spain and have written about food for many years. 1080 Recipes has sold over two million copies and has been the ultimate Spanish cooking bible since its first publication. Jose Andres, the chef widely credited with bringing tapas to America, has selected the recipes and written a new introduction about the tapas culture that has spread worldwide.
The sequel to The Battle, winner of the Priz Goncourt, continues the story of the Napoleonic Wars with the demoralized, exhausted, and much diminished French army in September 1812 at the gates of Moscow as Napoleon and his forces confront their most brutal challenge amid the cold and starvation of the Russian winter. Basic Food Microbiology
The second edition of Basic Food Microbiology follows the same general outline as the highly successful first edition. The text has been revised and updated to include as much as possible of the large body of infor mation published since the first edition appeared. Hence, foodborne ill ness now includes listeriosis as well as expanded information about Campylobacter jejuni. Among the suggestions for altering the text was to include flow sheets for food processes. The production of dairy products and beer is now depicted with flow diagrams. In 1954, Herrington made the following statement regarding a review article about lipase that he published in thejournal of Dairy Science: "Some may feel that too much has been omitted; an equal number may feel that too much has been included. So be it." The author is grateful to his family for allowing him to spend the time required for composing this text. He is especially indebted to his partner, Sally, who gave assistance in typing, editing, and proofreading the manuscript. The author also thanks all of those people who allowed the use of their information in the text, tables, and figures. Without this aid, the book would not have been possible. 1 General Aspects of Food BASIC NEEDS Our basic needs include air that contains an adequate amount of oxy· gen, water that is potable, edible food, and shelter. Food provides us with a source of energy needed for work and for various chemical reactions.
"Special Circumstances" - These words have sent chills down Tally's spine since her days as a rebellious Ugly. Back then Specials were a sinister rumour - frighteningly beautiful, dangerously strong, breathtakingly fast. Ordinary pretties might live their whole lives without meeting a Special. But Tally's never been ordinary… Now she's been turned into one of them: a superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the Uglies down and the Pretties stupid. The strength, the speed, and the clarity and focus of her thinking feel better than anything Tally can remember… most of the time. One tiny corner of her heart still remembers something more. Still, it's easy to tune that out - until Tally's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: carry out the mission she's programmed to complete, or listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat telling her that something's wrong… Either way, Tally's world will never be the same.
